How to Sharpen Your Reading Skills

More often than not, students often complain about their reading skills, some complain about low comprehension. This little piece is going to highlight some of the major bad habits that must be avoided.

Reading is a serious business, it could either make you or mar you. The former is as a result of determination, focus and dedication. To sharpen your reading skills, these top habits discussed below must be avoided.

REGRESSION -Regression is a bad habit and must be avoided while reading. Regression simply means the process of re-reading sentences or phrases that one has already read. Regression occurs as a result of poor concentration. Before you start reading, be fully aware that reading is a serious business, so you must be fully concentrated.

VOCALIZATION - Reading aloud to oneself as one reads is a bad habit that must be avoided. Vocalization slows down assimilation and comprehension. It affects reading rate. Fast reading and concentration aids comprehension. It also refers to the movement of vocal apparatus like the tongue, vocal cords or throat while reading. To sharpen your reading skill, you have to say NO to vocalization.

POOR POSTURE - Maintaining poor posture while reading posses great danger to the reader. Some student tend to lie in bed while others rest their head on the table. The adverse effect of maintaining poor posture while reading is failure or reading suicide as one would not comprehend or understand anything. However, for better result, one must maintain good sitting position. The best posture is to sit erect with one's elbow on the reading desk or table.

POINTING TO WORDS - Pointing to words while reading slows down reading rate. Student should understand that eyes moves faster than hands. So use your eyes not your hands. Some student use finger or pen. It is not advisable to point to words while reading.

Finally ,if all the bad habits discussed above are eliminated, it would help you to sharpen your reading skills.
